From Darkness to Light
A picture poem
“Where are they now in all their hidden ways,
The lovers and the loved ones yet to be?
Say, where is the Elder of Ancient Days
And where the Angel of Eternity?”
— Don’t trouble me, my friend, with thoughts like these,
But let me sit in silence here and cry
For the Gardens of Bliss that never cease
And the shining look in my dead love’s eye.
It is finished! — it is finished forever!—
Youth’s song and dance, sweet pleasure, sweetest pain—
The wine of life, the kiss of the Deceiver—
And all your golden dreams gone down the drain.
Take comfort from this in your darkness now:
Others have plumbed the secrets of the night.
The lost rosegarden and the Golden Bough
They found at last. See, out of Darkness — Light!
