A Buddhist Prayer
based on a passage in Buddhist literature
This is the Gospel of the Blessed One.
The is the revelation of the Enlightened One.
This is the bequest of the Holy One.
Truth is the end and aim of existence:
the worlds come into being
so that the truth may take root in the worlds.
Blessed is he who rests in the truth,
for all things will pass away
but the truth will abide for ever.
Errors can be fashioned as one pleases:
errors are pleasant to look upon
but contain their own dissolution within them.
The truth cannot be fashioned
for the truth is immutable:
even before life, the truth existed.
Lies are the sores of Mara the Tempter,
the Serpent who bedevils the minds of men
and leads them astray on the path of evil.
Many say, “Error, be thou my guide!”
These are caught in the net
of lust and anger and suffering.
Truth endures beyond the death of the body.
Truth is everlasting and eternal.
When the worlds pass away, the truth remains.
Truth leads us on the path of righteousness.
It is a straight and easy path.
Happy are they who walk in it.
