“ALL JEWS MUST DIE!”
— Robert Bowers, White Supremacist anti-Semitic killer
PITTSBURGH – Eleven people have been killed and six others injured after a shooting at The Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill on Saturday. Police sources told Andy Sheehan (of Pittsburg radio station KDKA) that the gunman , Robert Bowers, walked into the building and yelled, “All Jews must die.”
He then killed 11 Jewish worshippers and wounded several others with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and three handguns. No children were found among the casualties. The initial call to 911 was made at 9:54 a.m. and officers were dispatched to the scene within minutes.
Two officers arrived to see the assassin carrying an assault-style weapon. Bowers opened fire on them and then retreated back into the building. One of the officers suffered a gunshot wound to the hand. The other officer received several cuts to his face from shrapnel and broken glass.
The 46-year-old Bowers, a resident of Pittsburgh who had no previous criminal record, had recently expressed virulently anti-Semitic views on a social media site called Gab. The cover photo of this social media account featured a neo-Nazi symbol while his posts were filled with “anti-Semitic slurs and conspiracy theories”. One of the killer’s most recent posts included a photo of a fiery oven, similar to the ones reportedly used in Nazi concentration camps to cremate Jews during World War II.
Two hours prior to the shooting, Bowers posted about the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), a non-profit organisation that helps Jewish refugees relocate to the United States.
“HIAS likes to bring invaders in who kill our people.,” he had posted on the social media site called Gab. “I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. I’m going in!”
The accused had an active firearms license and had made at least six known gun purchases since 1996, a law enforcement official familiar with the ongoing probe into the case told CNN. As stated, he had no previous criminal record and was unknown to police. As a registered voter with “no affiliation” in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, Bowers, in one of his social media posts, had targeted President Donald Trump and accused him of being a “globalist” — a trendy euphemism for “cosmopolitan” or “Jew lover” — because the President had made no effort to stop the “infestation” of the United States by swarms of Jewish immigrants who had taken over America and now controlled its media as well as its government.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump condemned the attack at the synagogue and urged the residents of Squirrel Hill to remain indoors. Taking to Twitter, he said,
“Watching the events unfolding in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Law enforcement on the scene. People in Squirrel Hill area should remain sheltered. Looks like multiple fatalities. Beware of active shooter. God Bless All!”
Trump ordered that American flags at the White House be flown at half-staff on October 31. All flags at the White House, public grounds, military posts, naval stations and ships will be flown at half-staff throughout October 31 as a mark of “solemn respect” for the victims, the President ordered.
The FBI is investigating the attack as a “hate crime”.
