By Time’s River

You asked me if I’d ever had
Visions of things few others see,
Or heard strange voices in my head:
Inklings of immortality.

Never in the past, my precious one,
When you and I walked by time’s river
And watched the whirling waters run
And laughed and said, ‘This is for ever!’

There by the River Ran we stood
Where many before us stood and stared
And never really understood
The river’s song, or that it cared.

Plangent now the notes it sings
And bittersweet its poignant song:
‘I am the River of Time that brings
All lovers back where they belong.’
