Lady Michèle Renouf writes in a round-robin email:
All thanks to David Irving’s groundbreaking book in 1963, The Destruction of Dresden, following the unobtrusive revelation in 1961 by C.P Snow in his “Science and Government”, we learnt the real history of what happened in Dresden on Valentine’s Day 1945.
Today is the 76th anniversary of the destruction the German city of Dresden, a war crime that claimed the lives of up to 100,000 innocent civilians in an orgy of destruction lasting roughly 36 hours. The total destruction of the beautiful medieval city by British and American bombers had no strategic value to the Allies whatever. It was an an act of malignant pathology—evil for evil’s sake—which requires expiation. Churchill and Roosevelt, and Stalin who gained from it indirectly, all have blood on their hands. The German victims of this cruel atrocity, most of them women and children, need to be held in tender remembrance. [LD]
